Gamers want another round of Mortal Kombat. Wouldn’t you want one, too? No, we are not talking Vita version here. But is the next Mortal Kombat going to be due? We may want it but is it in the plans of the Mortal Kombat creator, who also happens to be the head of NetherRealm Studios, Ed Boon. Boon believes that his studio exists not just to develop Mortal Kombat games.

Boon is not against developing another Mortal Kombat title. In fact, he thinks that it would be a surprising turn of events if either Warner Bros. or they at the NetherRealm Studios do not come up with another game from the franchise. He says that they do not have “a title to announce”. However, the last Mortal Kombat has sold more than 3 million and is still selling. So, people do have the expectation that another instalment is on the way, at least even in the conceptualization table. Still, Boon wants his studio to be able to churn out other types of games from other genres and from new IPs.
So we might wait a long time for Mortal Kombat 10.

Boon, through voicing out this statement, is not really saying much about the studio’s future. At the moment though, the studio is already working on an iOS port for Arkham City. This is a strong indicator that the studio really is planning to work on other projects. The Arkham City project serves as some kind of trial where the studio is gauging what it can do. Boon says that they are working towards branching out and that they will continue to lean towards that direction. He, however, admits that a Mortal Kombat game is more likely to be in their future, as well, while 2012 will be a diversified year for them at NetherRealm. We think that it is fair enough that he is thinking of balance.
